Assistive Devices (www.dpacave.org.sg)

The DPA's Assistive Device Information Website is a database of Assistive Devices generally available in Singapore.

Educational Institutions (www3.moe.edu.sg)

Find out how assistive devices aid students with sensory impairments overcome obstacles to help them learn better and more easily.

For those of us without perfect eyesight, our pair of spectacles helps us to have better vision and thus rely less on others for assistance. Similarly, assistive devices help individuals with disabilities to have greater independence. Since 1999, MOE has provided assistive devices to students with visual and hearing impairment in mainstream schools. The various devices enhance the individual's learning abilities by addressing the specific difficulties.

Magnify Assistive Device Empbosser
A magnifying assistive device (R) and CCTV (L) to help students with visual impairment read the finer print in their textbooks. The embosser translates print to Braille which visually impaired students would be able to read using their keen sense of touch.

Students with visual impairment require the information from their textbooks or worksheets to be magnified or in Braille. The closed circuit television (CCTV) and video magnifier are useful magnifying aids for students with low vision. The students would place the reading material under a camera and the magnified image would be projected on the computer monitor.

Students who are totally blind learn the skill of Braille reading. The text information in its print form is converted into Braille using a computer and an embosser. Information from the computer is sent to the embossers for output in Braille.

Braillenotes Braillenotes is a PDA-like device which is portable and useful. It is able to store information from various sources such as textbooks and convert the information to speech or Braille. The information can either be keyed directly into the Braillenotes or be stored in memory cards. Students are able to use the Braillenotes for taking notes or completing their assignments in the classroom.
Braillenotes, the PDA-like device, is a portable and useful tool that can store information and relay it to the user as speech or Braille. In mathematical calculations, the students use talking calculators to assist them. These calculators have a voice output which allows the students
to know the results of their mathematical operations. Talking calculators are often used where scientific calculations are required. In addition to the talking calculator, the abacus is another device which is extensively used by students with visual impairment as they would be able to use their sense of touch to do calculations.
Talking Calculator Talking Dictionary
Talking calculators make mathematical problems easier for students who are visually impaired. This talking dictionary 'reads' out the meaning of the word.

The talking dictionary is another assistive device that is useful for the students who are in search of meanings of various words. In a method that is similar to the talking calculator, the voice output reads out the meaning of the word to the students.

Students with hearing impairment use the FM system in the classrooms. The FM system consists of a transmitter and a receiver. The system provides direct transmission from the teacher's transmitter/microphone to the student's receiver. This results in the clearer and better transmission of sound between teacher and student, thus, allowing the student to receive a clearer voice input.

With these special assistive devices, students with sensory impairments are assured that they are given every opportunity to do well in school.
