Tote Board 30th Anniversary – A Good Day Out

Tote Board commemorated 30 Years of Giving with “A Good Day Out” on 10 February 2018! As one of the partners, Disabled People’s Association spent the day at this all-inclusive carnival held at Gardens by the Bay. This milestone event which brought together more than 15,000 beneficiaries and members of the public was graced by Guest of Honor Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong and dedicated to the beneficiaries and social service organizations who partnered with Tote Board to give hope and improve the lives of all in Singapore.

Our Inclusion Ambassadors and volunteers arrived bright and early to set up our E-DATS (Experiential Disability Awareness) booth showcasing three different types of disabilities – General Awareness & Sensory, Autism, and Psycho-social. Aiming to raise awareness and encourage better understanding between persons with and without disabilities, our disability-specific booths offered interactive and experiential activities such as wheelchair challenge, lip reading, signing and experiential goggles. All who came by our booth engaged in a fun time of learning through problem solving exercises led by our Inclusion Ambassadors, and supported by our volunteers. Inclusion Ambassadors are DPA members with disabilities who are trained to engage with various target groups and raise awareness on disability. (more…)

AWARE and DPA call for stronger protection against employment discrimination

14 February 2018 – Gender equality group AWARE (Association of Women for Action and Research) and disability advocacy group DPA (Disabled People’s Association) have called for stronger protection against employment discrimination in a joint submission to the public consultation on the Employment Act review.

“We welcome this public consultation and strongly encourage that the Employment Act be extended to all employees in Singapore, regardless of position, type of contract, or salary earned,” said Corinna Lim, AWARE’s Executive Director. “We hope that existing provisions can be strengthened and new protections be introduced to better guarantee the rights of workers, especially vulnerable employees.”

Specifically, AWARE and DPA call for employers to be prohibited in discriminating on the basis of gender, race or ethnicity, religion, congenital or acquired disability, age, marital status, sexual orientation, and family or other caregiving responsibilities. (more…)

Inclusion Ambassadors Orientation Programme 2017

People with disabilities play an important role in achieving inclusion. Furthering DPA’s mission to be the voice of the people with disabilities, we have designed the Inclusion Ambassadors Programme to enable and nurture a select few of our members to effectively engage with the public to raise awareness and promote the inclusion of people with disabilities. This is one of our signature programmes that upholds the mission of DPA and carries the spirit of successful advocacy.

The beginning

Purple Fiesta, an event held on 29 May 2015, that supported the inclusion of people with disabilities in Singapore, was organised by Team Echo of Temasek Junior College, together with DPA. The Disability Awareness Talk Series (DATS) was officially launched by DPA’s Executive Director – Dr Medjeral-Mills, together with our first batch of student advocates – Team Echo from Temasek Junior College, and Project Butterfly Team from Hwa Chong Institution.  The goal of DATS is to disable the disability and embrace inclusion. Through DATS, we impart awareness, paving way to the successful inclusion of persons with disabilities. An interaction session was organised during this event, where Dr Medjeral-Mills attended with Ms Keng Ying Tan, a DPA Board Member, and other members – Escanan Eugene Jayme, Jorain Ng, and Kagda Sakina Abbasbhai. After witnessing the positive impact of DATS and the interaction session with our DPA members, DPA decided to go ahead with developing a programme to train our members to effectively interact with the public, thereby raising awareness. Merry Marathon 2017

On 20 December 2017, DPA took part in the Merry Marathon. Merry Marathon is an annual volunteering event initiated by students since 2012 and powered by Positive Intentions, a social enterprise. The aim of Merry Marathon is to spread the Christmas joy around Singapore, especially to those who may feel neglected during this festive season.

Merry Marathon volunteers had a great time with our Inclusion Ambassadors. Human library, inclusive games, carolling, making candy cane and passing the gifts were the main attractions of this year. There was also a Polaroid booth and Inclusion Ambassadors together with volunteers took many festive photos at this booth.
Eighteen volunteers and seven Inclusion Ambassadors participated in this event. The volunteers included mainly students from Junior colleges and some other educational institutions. (more…)

ASEAN Disability Forum (ADF)

From the 11th to 14th of December, Sumita Kunashakaran (Advocacy Executive) from the Disabled People’s Association hopped over the South China Sea to attend the ASEAN Disability Forum (ADF) conference and capacity building exercise in Manila together with our other ASEAN counterparts. The first couple of days (11th and 12th of December) consisted of a conference where participants had the opportunity to witness a beautiful opening ceremony presented by the choir from the Philippine National School for the Blind (PNSB), and an address by the Vice President of Philippines, Ms Maria Leonor Gerona Robredo herself. Ms Robredo spoke about how continued collaborations and the work that ASEAN does together has gone a long way in making Manila more inclusive for Persons-With-Disabilities (PWDs). However, she was also quick to highlight that the journey was still long from being over. (more…)
