(This is DPA’s media statement in response to the release of the Fare Review Mechanism Committee’s report on 5 November 2013)

The Disabled People’s Association welcomes and supports the Fare Review Mechanism Committee (FRMC)’s recommendation to grant concessions to people with disabilities for public transport fares, and that such subsidies are to be funded by the government. A transport fare concession, after all, has been a long-standing request of the local disability community.

We note that the government will only be replying to FRMC’s report next week, but we are optimistic that the government will be adopting most of its recommendations, in particular the one pertaining to subsidies for people with disability.  (more…)

IDPD Celebrations: Let’s Talk About Disability!

Posted: 25 September 2013

DPA will be celebrating the International Day of Person with Disabilities (IDPD) from 15 to 16 November 2013 at The Atrium at Jurong Point Shopping Centre.

The annual observance of IDPD was sparked by the proclamation of the International Year for Disabled Persons in 1981 by the United Nations General Assembly. The IDPD aims to raise awareness and understanding of disability issues among the general public, as well as promote the full participation and equality of persons with disabilities in society.

Our theme for this year’s celebration is “Let’s Talk About Disability!” – which is especially apt in view of the Government’s recent ratification of the United Nations Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. For the disability community in Singapore, this marks an important milestone and significant step towards an inclusive society in which they can enjoy equal rights and access in all aspects of life.  (more…)

Note to Students Proposing Research and Community Service Projects

Posted: 16 September 2013

As far as possible, we try to accommodate these requests – we appreciate your heart and thoughtfulness for the disability community. Thank you very much.

However, because DPA has a small staff count and limited resources, we are unable to participate in every project or agree to every interview request. Instead, we will prioritise such requests.

To improve your chances of being granted an interview, or being accepted by us as a partner in your community or research projects, you may want to take note of the following tips. (more…)
