Purple Symphony

DPA was invited to the launch of the Purple Symphony on 31 July at the Singapore Conference Hall. The Purple Symphony is an inclusive orchestra made up of musicians with and without disabilities. The Purple Symphony has eighty-three members aged between four and fifty-eight, with sixty-seven musicians who have special needs. One of the members is DPA’s Board of Management member and percussionist, Ms Lily Goh.

DPA President, Mr Nicholas Aw, and DPA Executive Director attended the event and were treated a performance of five pieces of music. The choice of music was as diverse as the make up of the orchestra, ranging from a piece from a Chinese blockbuster to classic Malay and Indian tunes. During the pieces, there were solo performances by Ms Stephanie Ow, an erhu player with a visual disability, and Mr Aloysius Wong, 16, who performed a drum solo and is a Pathlight School student.

The message of inclusion is drawn from the Purple Parade, which is a nationwide movement to celebrate persons with disabilities in Singapore, and will be the next event at which the orchestra will perform. To find out more about the Purple Symphony and the Purple Parade go towww.purpleparade.sg
